David Smith MP is the Federal Member for Bean and Government Whip in the Albanese Labor Government. First elected in 2019 to the House after serving in the Senate, and re-elected in 2022 and 2025, David has been a consistent voice for Canberra and its surrounding region. He currently serves on the Joint Standing Committee on Public Works and the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs, and is a member of the National Archives of Australia Advisory Council.
Born and raised in Canberra, David is passionate about public service, community leadership and supporting the next generation. He is a proud supporter of Menslink and has participated in the annual Menslink Great Walk, helping raise awareness of the importance of positive role models, mentoring and mental health support for young men.
Before entering Parliament, David worked in policy and industrial relations roles with the ACT Government, the Australian Federal Police Association and Professionals Australia. He lives in Farrer with his wife and three children
