In the spirit of service: Celebrating public service excellence with Pat Hetherington
Ahead of our annual Spirit of Service Awards Gala, Pat Hetherington, Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Social Services, talks about the importance of acknowledging excellence in public service, and why you should join us to celebrate some of the most impactful programs at our awards dinner on 8 November.
Can you describe what a spirit of service looks like to you?
To me, the spirit of service is the embodiment of integrity, collaboration and co-design that exists throughout the service in the aim of supporting and improving the lives of every Australian, particularly those in our communities that are most vulnerable. The spirit of service also lies in recognising that as public servants, we have the privilege of positively impacting other people’s lives just through our day-to-day work.
Why do you think it’s important to celebrate public service work?
I think it’s really important to celebrate successes and learn from mistakes in any part of life, the public service is definitely no different. We come to work every day in service of the Australian community and it’s important to acknowledge that when we get it right, we can make real change and have a real impact on improving the lives of Australians, and that is absolutely worth celebrating.
You saw the finalists at the pitch event. What was your broad impression of the calibre of finalists?
It’s an exceptional time to be a part of the public service. Our technology, environment, and world challenges are evolving so quickly and the calibre of finalists in this year’s awards displays some really impactful programs and strategies that help us meet those challenges head on. We should be proud of some of the work that’s been happening in the service.
What are you looking forward to the most about the gala dinner?
Unfortunately, I didn’t end up attending last year, but this year I’m looking forward to seeing the faces of those that are recognised in the awards, they should be rightly proud of their work.
