Breaking through Indigenous language barriers to close the gap and reduce debt and vulnerability for customers in remote communities

Services Australia

Our customers in remote Indigenous communities are some of the most vulnerable members of our society. They can struggle to interact with government services, policies and processes, adding to their high levels of debt and vulnerability. Our initiative’s objective is to close language barrier gaps using existing mediums. We developed tailored products spoken in Indigenous languages that enabled customers to listen to our payment and service messages in their language. Our work contributes to:

  • breaking through language barriers by providing Indigenous language products for our customers in remote communities
  • closing the gap through raising awareness, promoting education and improving participation
  • reducing the high levels of debt and vulnerability for remote Indigenous customers.
